The new collection aims to offer travelers a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of the Land of Enchantment, featuring a variety of mediums including sculpture, painting, and mixed media works. The art initiative is seen as a way of showcasing Albuquerque’s spirit to visitors from around the world. “The Sunport is the gateway to our city, and art helps showcase Albuquerque’s spirit, welcoming visitors from all over the world with a taste of what makes our city so unique,” said Mayor Tim Keller.
The acquisition includes five additional installations, introduced at the Sunport in December 2023. Selected works include a mixed-media mural by JP, a metal sculpture by Virgil Ortiz, a vinyl mural by Michael Toya, and a low-rider inspired airplane installation by Sky Candy LLC. Travelers will be encouraged to interact with the artworks and learn about the artists and inspirations behind their works through QR codes placed near each installation.
The City’s Office of Public Art received a total of 384 submissions for this project. Aviation Director Richard McCurley said, “This project reflects the growing recognition of arts and culture as key drivers of economic development and community pride.” The Sunport, New Mexico’s largest commercial airport, welcomes over 5.4 million passengers each year and serves as a significant landmark for showcasing local talent and the city’s support for the arts.
The Albuquerque International Sunport is owned and operated by the City of Albuquerque’s Aviation Department. It offers nonstop service between ABQ and 32 destinations, with worldwide connectivity, serving as the Gateway of New Mexico.
