“BLM Greenlights Land Swap to Boost Water Management and Tortoise Habitat in Washington County”

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has approved the Red Cliffs-Warner Valley Land Exchange in Washington County, Utah. This move will allow the Washington County Water Conservancy District to use the land for future water management needs in the rapidly growing county. At the same time, it will enable the BLM to ensure long-term protection for the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area.

Under the agreement, the state will gain 929 acres of public lands in Warner Valley, located in eastern Washington County. In return, the BLM will receive 89 private acres within the conservation area, which is designated as a critical habitat for the Mojave desert tortoise. An appraisal was conducted to ensure the exchange was carried out at fair market value.

BLM St. George Field Manager Jason West stated that the exchange aligns with their commitment to advance the Washington County Habitat Conservation Plan. This plan aims to consolidate federal ownership and enhance habitat protection for the Mojave desert tortoise. The BLM is pleased to support the Water Conservancy District’s efforts to ensure a long-term water supply for the county. The protest period for this exchange will close on July 7, 2025.
