The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Colorado State Office has initiated a 30-day public comment period, seeking input on its plan to include 61 oil and gas parcels, totaling 51,068 acres, in a December 2025 sale. The public comment period, which ends on July 18, 2025, follows the completion of scoping on these parcels by the BLM in March 2025. The BLM is now inviting public opinions on the parcels, potential deferrals, and the related environmental analysis.

Leasing is the initial step in the process of developing federal oil and gas resources. Before development operations can commence, an operator must submit an application for a permit to drill, detailing development plans. The BLM reviews these applications, posts them for public review, conducts an environmental analysis, and coordinates with state partners and stakeholders.

All parcels included in a federal oil and gas lease sale come with appropriate stipulations to protect essential natural resources. Information on current and upcoming BLM leases can be accessed through the National Fluid Lease Sale System. BLM lease sales are conducted online via EnergyNet. Maps and instructions on how to comment on the parcels BLM is analyzing are available on the BLM’s ePlanning website.
