The BLM manages approximately 245 million acres of public land, primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska. This action is part of its responsibility to manage and protect these lands on behalf of the American people.
In addition to the land it manages on the surface, the BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. This recent closure is part of their ongoing efforts to protect these areas from the impacts of wildfires and other natural disasters.
