The BLM oversees approximately 245 million acres of public land, primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska. The agency is responsible for the management of these lands on behalf of the American people. The upcoming prescribed burns are part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance the health and diversity of these lands.

In addition to the land it manages, the BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The organization’s actions, including the planned burns, are guided by its aim to ensure the productive use of these lands and resources for both current and future generations.
