The BLM is responsible for managing around 245 million acres of public land, primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska. The land is managed on behalf of the American people, with a focus on ensuring its sustainable use for both present and future generations.

In addition to the surface land, the BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The rehabilitation efforts in the Monroe Canyon area will likely involve both surface restoration and sub-surface recovery, given the extensive reach of the fire. The specific strategies and timelines for the rehabilitation process have not been detailed in the announcement.
