The first honorees include James B. Lewis, a former New Mexico state treasurer and respected public servant whose almost 50-year career involved local, state, and federal government. Lewis is recognized for breaking racial and institutional barriers and exemplifying integrity, excellence, and commitment to the public good. Soledad Chávez de Chacón, a trailblazer and former New Mexico secretary of state, is another honoree. Chávez de Chacón became the first Hispanic woman in the U.S. elected to statewide office in 1922 and later served as acting governor, making national history and paving the way for women and Hispanic leaders across the country.
The third honoree is Dr. Lenton Malry, a lifelong educator and community advocate who became New Mexico’s first Black legislator in 1969. His decades of service have significantly transformed public education and advanced civil rights throughout the state. The tribute to Chávez de Chacón during Hispanic Heritage Month adds a powerful dimension to her recognition, representing the rich legacy of Hispanic leadership in New Mexico and inspiring new generations of leaders, particularly Latinas in public service.
The Breakthrough New Mexicans Tribute aims to highlight individuals whose achievements have had a transformative impact on New Mexico’s social, economic, cultural, and wellness landscape. By recognizing these leaders, the initiative seeks to promote a culture of innovation, inclusion, and service that defines New Mexico’s identity and future. The tribute will continue on a recurring basis, with future honorees selected based on impact, innovation, integrity, and service.
