The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced plans to conduct prescribed burns in Northeast California and Northwest Nevada. This action is part of a proactive strategy to reduce the risk of wildfires in these areas. BLM, responsible for managing about 245 million acres of public land mainly in 12 western states, including Alaska, is undertaking this mission to maintain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for present and future generations.

Prescribed burns, also known as controlled burns, are carefully planned and executed fires, designed to manage vegetation that could potentially fuel uncontrollable wildfires. By removing this excess vegetation, the likelihood of a wildfire spreading rapidly is significantly reduced. These burns are typically conducted during conditions that allow the fire to be managed safely, ensuring that the flames do not spread beyond the predetermined area.

The BLM also oversees 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate across the nation. The planned prescribed burns in Northeast California and Northwest Nevada are part of the BLM’s ongoing commitment to land and resource management, and to the safety and enjoyment of these lands by the American people.
