“BLM Invites Public Opinion on 2026 Oil and Gas Lease Sales Spanning Six States”

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has initiated a 30-day public comment period to gather feedback on its plan to include oil and gas parcels in Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, and Nevada in its March 2026 lease sales. The public comment period, which ends on December 12, 2025, is part of the BLM’s review process and will be used to inform its decision on each parcel. The BLM is set to offer 103 oil and gas parcels covering 72,848 acres in Colorado and 11 parcels covering 19,957 acres in Nevada.

In the eastern states, the BLM is planning to offer eight oil and gas leases spanning 506 acres across Arkansas, Louisiana, Michigan, and Mississippi. The bureau completed scoping for the Eastern States parcels in July 2025, the Nevada parcels in August 2025, and the Colorado parcels in September 2025. Now, the BLM is seeking public comment on the parcels, potential deferrals, and the related environmental analyses.

Leasing is the first step in the process of developing federal oil and gas resources. Before development can begin, a company must submit an application for a permit to drill that outlines its development plans. The BLM then reviews the applications, posts them for public review, conducts an environmental analysis, and coordinates with state partners and stakeholders. All parcels included in a federal oil and gas lease sale come with stipulations to protect important natural resources. Information on current and upcoming BLM leases is available through the National Fluid Lease Sale System and the BLM’s ePlanning website.
