“BLM Greenlights Northern Corridor Highway Construction to Alleviate St. George Traffic”

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has given the green light for the construction of the Northern Corridor highway in Washington County, Utah. The decision follows an application in 2018 by the Utah Department of Transportation for a right-of-way for a four-lane highway north of St. George, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the area.

The BLM has conducted extensive environmental reviews and public comment periods in 2020, 2024, and 2025 to assess the potential impacts on public land resources. This process led to the dismissal of an earlier proposal to upgrade the Red Hills Parkway. The Utah Department of Transportation demonstrated that this upgrade would not be technically or economically feasible.

BLM Color Country District Manager Gloria Tibbetts said the organization revisited previous environmental impact statements and encouraged the public to submit further comments for consideration in the environmental assessment. She added, “We are committed to continually monitor our decisions and balance our responsibilities as public land managers and good neighbors.” The BLM will continue to provide updates and additional information through the BLM National NEPA Register.
