“BLM Unveils Massive 50,980-Acre Oil and Gas Lease Sale in Colorado for December 2025”

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced a sale of oil and gas leases in Colorado, set to take place on December 9, 2025. The sale will offer 60 oil and gas parcels totaling 50,980 acres. The BLM completed scoping on these parcels in March 2025 and held a public comment period that closed in July 2025. A 30-day public protest period to gather additional public input has been launched, set to close on November 10, 2025.

The leasing process is the first step in the development of federal oil and gas resources. Before any development operations can commence, an operator must submit an application for a permit to drill, detailing their development plans. The BLM then reviews these applications, posts them for public review, conducts an environmental analysis, and coordinates with state partners and stakeholders.

All parcels included in a federal oil and gas lease sale come with stipulations to protect important natural resources. Information on current and upcoming BLM leases can be found through the National Fluid Lease Sale System. The lease sales are conducted online via EnergyNet. Detailed information about the parcels, maps, and instructions on how to submit a protest are available on the BLM’s National NEPA Register website.
