“BLM Unveils Plans for Habitat Restoration and Herbicide Treatment Overhaul”
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing to undertake habitat restoration work and update its herbicide treatment practices across the 245 million acres of public land it manages. The public lands are primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska. The BLM’s mission is to maintain the health, diversity, and productivity of these lands for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
In addition to the surface land, the BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The proposed changes are aimed at ensuring the sustainable use of these resources while protecting the environment.
The BLM is seeking public input and action on these proposals. The updates to herbicide treatment practices are expected to enhance the management of invasive species, a significant threat to the health of public lands. The habitat restoration work will help to maintain the diversity and productivity of these lands.
