“Sunport Blvd Gets $1.9M Facelift: Smooth Travels Ahead for Holiday Season”

Albuquerque Asphalt has commenced repaving works on the Sunport Loop, the main roadway serving passengers at Albuquerque International Sunport. The project, funded by a $1.9M grant from the Airport Infrastructure Grant Program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is expected to be completed by November 20. The repaving project covers the resurfacing of the route from I-25 eastbound, through the terminal loop, and back to University Blvd.

Mayor Tim Keller highlighted the importance of the project, stating that the road is one of the first sights for visitors to Albuquerque and should give a positive first impression. The Sunport Loop, despite being a short stretch of road, sees a high volume of daily traffic and was due for rehabilitation. The repaving is informed by data to ensure key routes receive attention when necessary.

Acting Director of Aviation, Manny Manriquez, emphasized the project as a significant investment in customer experience and the long-term infrastructure of the Sunport. The improvements are expected to enhance the Sunport’s service to New Mexico for many years to come. According to Sunport fast facts, there were 157,619 takeoffs and landings in 2024, averaging 431 per day, and it handled 114,439,281 metric tons of cargo in FY24, including air cargo from Amazon Air, FedEx, and UPS.
